The challenge

In DeFi, monitoring the health and stability of assets is crucial for investors and analysts. One of the key indicators of asset health is its liquidity – the ease with which it can be traded without significant price impact. However, tracking liquidity across various decentralized exchanges (DEXs) can be complex and time-consuming.

Our users identified a need for a tool that could provide real-time insights into liquidity pool compositions, particularly for stablecoins. This information would serve as a vital health indicator for assets they hold.

What is an Automatic Market Maker (AMM)?

An Automatic Market Maker (AMM) is a type of decentralized exchange protocol that relies on mathematical formulas to price assets instead of using a traditional order book. Liquidity providers (LPs) deposit equal values of two tokens into a pool, and traders can swap between these tokens, with prices adjusting based on the pool’s ratio. AMMs like Uniswap, SushiSwap, and Balancer are fundamental to DeFi, allowing for automated and permissionless trading of assets.

More on AMMs and LPs.

The solution

To address this challenge, we created a DEX liquidity pool monitoring tool as part of our suite of DeFi analytics tools. Major functionalities are:

  • Real-time monitoring of liquidity pool compositions across multiple DEXs
  • Automatic detection of significant changes in pool balances
  • Customizable alerts for users to track specific assets or thresholds
  • Visual representations of liquidity pool data for easy analysis

The Impact

This app has proven invaluable in providing early insights into market movements and potential asset instability. Some notable examples include:

Silicon Valley Bank Event: During the Silicon Valley Bank crisis, our tool detected a massive shift from USDC to USDT in real-time. This allowed our users to react quickly to the changing market dynamics. Here is analysis on X account:

Stablecoin market analysis after a few black swan events.

Other significant shifts. The tool has also captured other liquidity movements, providing users with timely information about market sentiment and potential risks.

Some alarming examples that we tweeted about:

LUSD Sell-Off
Captured huge LUSD sell-off.
FRAX selloff
Huge outflow form FRAX/USDC pool on Curve finance.

The outcome

The LP monitoring tool tool has become an essential part of many users’ DeFi analytics toolkit. It has:

  • Enhanced decision-making processes for traders and investors
  • Provided early warning signals for potential market instability
  • Offered valuable insights into market sentiment and asset health
  • Increased user confidence in navigating DeFi

Most of the time, Automatic Market Makers (AMMs) return to equilibrium once the market calms down. However, the ability to monitor these liquidity pools in real-time provides a significant advantage to DeFi participants.
